Our Story

No child will go Hungry and Unskilled in our Community.

Helping each other can make world better

Walk a Mile in My Shoes (WAMIMS) Youth Centre is a registered Non-Profit Organisation (NPO No. 184-886) and Public Beneficiary Organisation (PBO No. 930058876), founded in 2017 by Mme Gladys “Madea” Saul. Guided by a dedicated Board of Trustees, WAMIMS is committed to transforming the lives of children and youth in Jouberton, Klerksdorp, and beyond.

WAMIMS began with a simple but powerful idea: no child should go to bed hungry. What started with feeding three siblings who were begging for food at a nearby supermarket grew into feeding over 200 children daily within the first year, and today, WAMIMS provides meals for over 1,000 children every day. This gave birth to our flagship Feeding & Nutrition Programme, which continues to be the heartbeat of our organisation.

Today, WAMIMS operates from two community centres our main hub in Jouberton and a satellite centre in Sunnyside Informal Settlement. Both centres serve as safe spaces where food is prepared and provided to vulnerable young people identified as being at risk. The main centre also boasts a communal food garden, where community volunteers grow vegetables that support the feeding scheme and supplement their own households.

Beyond food security, WAMIMS centres act as community hubs, offering a range of skills development programmes and support services for families. These include access to information, computer resources, personal development workshops, and practical skills training equipping young people and families with tools to create a better future.

None of this would be possible without the support of thousands of caring South Africans from ordinary members of the public to influential business leaders whose generosity sustains our work. Their partnership ensures that WAMIMS can continue walking alongside children and families, providing hope, dignity, and opportunity where it is needed most.
